How to Inspect a Used Massage Table Before Buying?

A massage table is an important piece of equipment for chiropractors, physiotherapists, and spas. But sometimes, the cost is higher than expected. What can you do? Well, to cut some costs, you can consider investing in a used massage table.

As a new graduate, a new therapist looking for an affordable option is a smart choice. However, before you commit, it is important to inspect the massage table carefully and make the right decision. =. To ensure you’re purchasing an adequate table, keep these key points in mind!

Here’s the list you should check.

1. Inspect for the Frame and Quality

The frame is the backbone of any massage table. If the frame is weak or damaged, the table is already unfit for use. You can do the following checks depending on the materials used to make the frame of the massage table.

  • For Wooden Frames: Examine carefully for cracks, chips, or warping. Also, make sure that the wood feels solid and not soft or splintering.
  • For Aluminium Frames: Check for bends, rust, or dents. Keep in mind aluminium is light; however, if damaged, it can eventually affect the stability.
  • Joints and Hinges: While examining the table, make sure to open and close the table several times. Check for noises, squeaks, or anything that may signal that the table is worn out.

2. Check Stability

Check the surface of the massage table by pressing down firmly on different areas looking at the corners, centres, and sides. Give the table a good shake to ensure that the table is stable and secure. A quality table must be steady even under pressure.

3. Touch the Padding

To retain clients, as a therapist, you must offer them comfort. Therefore, you should ensure:

  • Make sure that the thickness of your massage table padding is between 5 and 7 cm. This is the standard thickness of the table.
  • Press the foam with your hand to check that it is not flat, lumpy, or uneven. If that’s the case, consider replacing it.
  • Examine whether your massage table padding has any smell.

4. Examine Upholstery

The upholstery of the table is the most visible part to patients, thus it should be free from any sort of damage. Check for small cracks, ensure stitching is intact, that the upholstery is clean, and that it is maintained properly. These are very small things to check, but if ignored, they may grow into a cost for both you and your patient. Also, make sure that the material of the upholstery is easy to clean and in good shape.

5. Ensure Weight Capacity

Every massage table comes with a maximum limit of handling weight. This capacity includes the client’s weight and the pressure you will apply while treating them. Therefore, you should check for the manufacturer’s label and ask for the seller’s details. Most tables support at least 450 to 600 lbs (roughly 204 kg to 272 kg). If you are not sure of the weight rating, check the next table.

6. Adjustability is Important

The massage table is a sacred space where, as a therapist, you perform some effective and life-changing therapies for your client. But these therapies can put strain on your back and shoulders. However, if you opt for a table that has an adjustable height feature, ideally with just a push button, it can make your work easy without putting any strain on your body.

7. Ensure Accessories

Most massage tables come with accessories like face cradles, arm rests, or a carry case (if portable). Make sure that the face cradle locks firmly; it is not weak, loose, or broken. Armrests are not wobbly or sagging. For the carry case, check its zippers and straps. Yes, accessories add value to the purchase, but they should be in good condition.

8. Know Table’s History

Ask the seller about the history of the massage table. For example, how long it was in use, whether it was a professional clinic, or whether it has undergone any repairs, and so on. The answers will clear a lot of doubts and help you choose a good table.

9. Check Hygiene and Safety

Massage tables are always in contact with clients, so maintaining hygiene is important. Check for stains, mould, or lingering odours. Also, ask the seller if the table was disinfected on a regular basis or not. If the hygiene is questionable, you may need to reconsider the cost of replacing upholstery or padding.

10. Compare Price

A used massage table is more budget friendly compared to a new one. Therefore, you must compare prices with the brand’s present retail values. Ensure you do not overpay for the value of the used table. You must consider spending a bit more for a good table.

Final Words

Purchasing a used electric massage table is a smart investment; however, if you take the time to inspect it carefully, do it. Examine the frame, build quality, stability, padding, upholstery, weight capacity, accessories, table’s history, and more. This examination is important not only to save money but also to consider that your table provides comfort to your patients. Read through the guide, leave comments to get answers for your queries.
